Dear Sir Roger,
Whilst flying the BAe 146 for 16 years I was repeatedly exposed to visible white oil fumes in the cockpit and cabin, particularly after starting the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) on the ground before the first flight of the day.
I did not take photos at the time and, as no one believes the written testimony of professional aircrew I am enclosing a photo from a passenger flight of an actual oil fume event as evidence.
I was not the only one who was repeatedly exposed to oil fumes; countless other professional aircrew and passengers over the years have experienced the same phenomenon and continue to do so – on all bleed air powered jet airliners.
On 6th November 2007 I wrote to Professor Helen Muir of Cranfield University offering to fill a BAe 146 with visible oil fumes on the ground in order that the oil fumes could be tested, but my offer was declined. See enclosed e mail exchange.
In 2011 the government finally published the Cranfield data, but only identified the chemicals in so-called normal air – apparently the University were incapable of measuring a fume event during four years of testing and therefore the concentrations of chemicals in a visible oil fume event have never yet been published for public consideration.
I am writing to you now to request that you share both the identity and the concentrations of chemicals in a visible oil fume event, which must have been measured.
Additionally, I am also writing to invite you personally to repeatedly experience a visible oil fume event on the ground such that you too are exposed and can then confirm your own belief that human exposure to unpublished concentrations of chemicals in a confined space do not pose a public health risk.
I look forward to your prompt responses and the missing evidence.
