Dear Editor, 29th March 2017
Westgate Coroner’s Inquest.
From 6th – 13th April 2017 there will be a five day long Coroner’s inquest at Salisbury, UK into the death of Richard Mark Westgate, a former BA pilot who died in The Netherlands on 12th December 2012, unless the inquest is further delayed by legal technicalities.
Richard first contacted the Aerotoxic Association Ltd (www.aerotoxic.org) on 16th March 2012 for medical and legal advice; he was advised to seek specialist medical assistance for aerotoxic syndrome from The Netherlands and was put in touch with Cannons Law, Glasgow.
Richard travelled directly to The Netherlands and was immediately taken into the care of Dr Michel Mulder, a specialist in human poisoning caused by jet airliners, which was first identified by scientists from the US, France and Australia in 1999 as Aerotoxic Syndrome.
Before Richard unexpectedly died, he and I were making plans to contact and travel to the European Court of Human Rights in The Hague to draw attention to the ongoing Aerotoxic health scandal which is recorded in emails and personal diaries. Copies of which were handed over to the present Westgate lawyers as formal evidence in 2016, as it is illegal to pervert the course of justice or withhold evidence from a public Court.
On 16th February 2015 Stanhope Payne, the Senior Coroner for Dorset issued a Regulation 28 Report ‘To Prevent Future Deaths’ to both BA and the CAA with a response required by 13th April 2015.
Both documents are enclosed along with a 2017 article about the inquest by the Bournemouth Echo and a typical passenger testimony of an oil fume event exposure from 2003.
On 21st July 2016 a Pre Inquest Review was held at Bournemouth Coroner’s Court but the Senior Coroner, Stanhope Payne was replaced by Dr Simon Fox QC who judged that an Article 2 type of inquest was not necessary without any jury involvement.
The following questions arise:
- Why was Stanhope Payne, the Senior Coroner, removed from the Westgate case in July 2016?
Why have the following experts and witnesses not been called to give their expert evidence at the inquest?
- Dr Michel Mulder of The Netherlands who cared for Richard Westgate and jointly carried out his post mortem and has published scientific research papers on Aerotoxic Syndrome.
- Professor Abou Donia of the US, who tested Richard Westgate’s blood in life and tissue after death and published scientific research papers.
- Professor Jeremy Ramsden, formerly of Cranfield University and an expert in both cabin air quality, human organophosphate exposure and the Westgate case.
- Captain John Hoyte first contact and professional colleague of Richard Westgate.
In July 2015 a German Documentary film Unfiltered breathed in Air – the truth about Aerotoxic Syndrome was premiered in Berlin, Germany and was based on the life and death of Richard Westgate http://www.unfilteredbreathedin.com/
A book was published in December 2014 Aerotoxic Syndrome – Aviation’s Darkest Secret by John Hoyte Chairman of the Aerotoxic Association which was founded at the UK Houses of Parliament on 18th June 2007. Evidence was published in the book concerning his relationship and the death of Richard Westgate in 2012.
The inquest date was reported in the Bournemouth Echo on 19th January 2017: Quote:
Mr Westgate’s parents, Judy and Peter, have claimed airlines and regulators have failed to act for many years, despite evidence of poisoning.
Mrs Westgate said: “Richard would complain about the aircraft being smelly. He would go away and come back from trips feeling worse. It is hard not to believe there has been some sort of cover-up.”
As all legal claims for public poisoning are settled ‘out of Court’, this means that a Coroner’s Court is the only opportunity for public exposure of the issue and to mandate the known technical changes, such as poison detectors in all jet airliners, apart from the B.787.
As no written or verbal evidence or sworn testimonies from poisoned aircrew or passengers is believed by doctors employed by the airlines and governments – it has been impossible to present testimonial evidence to a public Court. Apart from an Australian High Court (Turner v’s East West Airlines 2010) where a BAe 146 passenger finally won her cause of serious ill health – but18 years after a single oil fume event flight in 1992.
As a premature, unexplained death of an aircrew member from suspected poisoning has serious implications for the prevention of future deaths for other aircrew and the travelling public, the full and unrestricted public reporting of the Westgate inquest is requested, as a matter of public interest.

It is suspected that the so-called media prefer ‘politicians expense scandals’ etc to a known cause of mass public ill health – on the balance of probability.
