A Germanwings Airbus A319-100, registration D-AKNK performing flight 4U-2734 from Stuttgart (Germany) to Krakov (Poland), was climbing out of Stuttgart when a strong odour of smelly fish and old socks became noticeable in the forward section of the cabin. All flight attendants as well as at least one passenger started to feel unwell with symptoms like headache, dizziness, heart racing, nausea, sore threat, bitter taste on tongue, disturbance of consciousness including “black before the eyes”, difficulties to concentrate and extreme tiredness. One flight attendant needed to stop service, was taken to the cockpit and was administered oxygen for the remainder of the flight. The aircraft landed safely in Krakow about 70 minutes after departure from Stuttgart. The entire crew went for medical checks. The affected passenger also went to see a doctor.
At least two flight attendants are still unfit to return to work standing January 2017. The passenger’s current status is unknown.
Germany’s BFU reported on Jan 16th 2017, that they are aware of the occurrence, which the BFU rated an incident and therefore is not investigating.
The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground in Krakow for 33 hours, then resumed service.
